Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurological disease that primarily affects young adults, leading to cognitive, sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunctions (National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2023). In Nigeria, the prevalence of MS remains under-researched, but a growing number of cases are being diagnosed in various regions, including Gombe State (Usman et al., 2024). MS patients often experience chronic pain, which can severely affect their quality of life and ability to function in daily activities (Kassim et al., 2023). Effective pain management is critical for MS patients, as untreated pain can exacerbate the progression of the disease and contribute to emotional distress.
Nurses are at the forefront of pain management, especially for chronic conditions such as MS, and play a key role in assessing pain levels, administering medication, providing non-pharmacological interventions, and offering emotional support to patients (Omotayo et al., 2023). However, there is limited data on the role of nurses in pain management for MS patients in Gombe State, especially in terms of their training, strategies, and challenges. This study seeks to appraise the role of nurses in managing pain for MS patients in Gombe State hospitals and evaluate how their interventions affect patient well-being.
Multiple sclerosis is associated with complex pain that is often poorly understood by both patients and healthcare providers (Browne et al., 2024). In Gombe State, nurses involved in the care of MS patients may face challenges related to limited training in pain management, lack of specialized resources, and insufficient patient education (Abubakar et al., 2024). Consequently, patients may experience inadequate pain relief, leading to worsened health outcomes and a diminished quality of life. It is important to examine how nurses manage MS-related pain and identify opportunities to improve pain management protocols.
This study will focus on nurses’ roles in pain management for MS patients in Gombe State hospitals. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by nurses and the challenge of generalizing findings to other hospitals in the region.
